Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was probably the greatest genius in western musical history. A prodigy, as a child in Vienna he mastered the piano at age 4 and composed his first piece at age 5, a minuet. Along with Josef Haydn, Mozart perfected the grand forms of symphony, opera, string quartet and concerto that marked the classical period in music.
